Wound care has changed immeasurably since Susan Carlson began her nursing career 30 years ago, and that is why she has dedicated herself to becoming the wound care expert at Hackley Visiting Nurse Services and Hospice, Inc.. She keeps the HVNS and Hospice nursing staff up-to-the-minute on the latest treatment materials and techniques for ostomy, surgical and diabetic wounds, resulting in better outcomes for patients at lower cost.
“Not too long ago, dressings were changed up to three times a day, necessitating longer hospital stays or multiple home visits a day,” she explained, adding, “But today that is too costly for the patient and insurance companies won’t reimburse. Besides, with new dressing materials and moist wound healing, it is no longer necessary.”
Susan began her education at Hackley Hospital’s School of Nursing, graduating in 1975 as a registered nurse. Ten years later, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University, and 10 years after that she attended a special six-week program at Emory University where she earned her certification as a Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse. She credits Nancy McCarthy, VNS President and CEO, with her continuing specialization in the field. After 14 years in the Cardiac Care Unit at Hackley Hospital, including five years of nursing management, Susan joined the VNS in 1989.
“From day one, Nancy encouraged me—as she encourages all of us—to train and specialize in our fields. She sent us to national conferences, and she encouraged me to attend the Emory program for certification.”
As a result, the VNS and Hospice staff members have a remarkable resource in Susan, who conducts ongoing staff training, serves as liaison with physicians and hospital staff, and provides direct patient care. Area physicians benefit from Susan’s knowledge, but patients gain the most.
“The goal is always the patient’s comfort and freedom. If we see them early enough and can follow them through their care, they can regain their independence in less time, and at lower cost.”
